BT Backs Campaign For A Greener Glasgow

BT is the latest partner in a high-profile campaign to make Glasgow one of the most sustainable cities in Europe, it was announced today.

The communications company has signed up to Sustainable Glasgow, which brings together the public and private sectors and academia to reduce carbon emissions, boost the local economy and tackle social issues.

Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland and a member of the country’s 2020 Climate Group, said: “As a major employer in Glasgow and a provider of communications services for thousands of local people, we have a responsibility to contribute to the life and wellbeing of the city.

“Membership of Sustainable Glasgow is a great way to work with other large organisations to tackle some of the major issues that face us. These are not unique to Glasgow, but strong leadership here will have a positive impact around Scotland – and attract attention from Europe and the wider world.

“Communications technologies have a massive role to play in shaping sustainable communities – not only in terms of lowering carbon emissions, for instance by offering commuters an alternative to travel, but in helping businesses to compete and be productive, and attracting inward investment. Our infrastructure can also be used in large-scale environmental projects, for instance to transmit and monitor data from smart meters.

“We hope to play a significant role in helping Sustainable Glasgow to meet its extremely challenging aims.”

Sustainable Glasgow is a city-wide partnership to make Glasgow one of the most liveable and sustainable cities in Europe. Members include Glasgow City Council, the University of Strathclyde, Scottish Power, Scottish and Southern Energy and Scottish Enterprise.

The city is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 30 per cent within 10 years and building a greener and more sustainable future for Glaswegians. The unparalleled strategic approach taken by Glasgow will help to create jobs and boost the economy, tackle social issues including fuel poverty and regenerate the city.
