A housing investment programme worth over £3.9 million for the Levenmouth area was approved by councillors at a meeting of the Levenmouth Area Committee on Wednesday 2 February.
Over the course of the next year (Apr 2011 - Mar 2012), the significant investment will be spent on upgrading roofs, roughcasting, windows and doors, kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems installed by the council.
Councillor David Alexander, Chair of the Levenmouth Area Committee said: “We’re investing in the properties that need it the most.
“This programme outlines an investment in almost one in four council houses in Levenmouth. That’s an unprecedented number of our properties that will be better quality homes for our tenants by next spring.”
Councillor Brain Goodall, Chair of the Housing and Communities Committee added: “The ‘Better Homes’ exhibition we held last year was a real success in terms of giving tenants a better understanding of the types of modernisation works the council are carrying out in homes across Fife. We will be holding another exhibition in March this year and I urge tenants to take advantage of this event which is also used to capture their views and expectations.”
Cllr Alexander concluded: “Improvements like this have helped us to reduce the number of empty properties in the area to record lows.
“Over the past year there’s been a remarkable combined effort from teams in the council’s housing and communities services to make the most of our property and improve local communities in Levenmouth.
“We’ve invested in the buildings, green spaces and play areas to make streets more attractive places to live. And, importantly, teams are working more closely to find the right properties for the right tenants and to support those who have previously been homeless to help them settle in a new tenancy so that homes aren’t left empty again.”
At the last meeting of the Levenmouth Area Committee on 1 December, a report showed that the number of empty properties (sometimes referred to as voids) had fallen to just 64, against a target of 113. Across Fife voids have been falling over the past seven quarters.
