'Cowboy Builders' Warning For Householders

Dundee City Council's trading standards chiefs are warning householders, whose homes may have been damaged by the recent snow and ice, to be wary of cowboy builders.

As the weather improves consumer protection staff have told people to be on their guard when dealing with anyone who turns up on the doorstep offering to carry out repairs or other services.

Craig Melville, depute convener of Dundee City Council's environment services committee said: "All too often the story ends with householders being cheated out of their money and being left with an unsatisfactory job, usually requiring further remedial work.

"Don't be pressurised into making on the spot decisions, and always arrange for a minimum of three quotes from builders if you are looking to get snow or ice damage repaired.

"This will allow you to check the true extent of the work needed and compare prices."

He also advised householders to make sure that they have checked with their insurers before any building work is agreed.

Reliable tradesmen can be found on the Dundee City Council backed website www.trustedtrader.info where feedback from previous customers can be used to help choose the right firm.

Cllr Melville added: "If you are on a low income and in receipt of a Guaranteed Pension Credit, Disability Living Allowance or Incapacity Benefit it may be worth contacting Dundee City Council's care and repair team on 435412/435422 to find out if you qualify for financial support to meet the cost of repairs. "

Anyone who has been approached by a cowboy builder, or has concerns about traders acting suspiciously in their area, should contact trading standards on 01382 436260.
