Mott MacDonald Assesses Flood Risks For Scottish Water

Mott MacDonald has been appointed as consultants by Scottish Water to provide flood risk assessments of 292 of the water company’s assets at sites across mainland Scotland and its surrounding islands.

The assessments are part of a strategy by Scottish Water to understand the risk of flooding to its assets following the Pitt Review into the 2007 floods and also the implementation of the Scottish Flood Risk Management Act 2009. Mott MacDonald, together with sub consultant JBA Consulting, will be visiting the sites, taking photographs, recording survey measurements, running computer models for adjacent river or sea levels and assessing the risk of flooding against different return periods. Common costing information will also be developed to estimate flood alleviation investment needs and post flooding recovery costs for each site.

Scottish Water’s assets include water and wastewater treatment works as well as pumping stations. The assets risk of flooding from either river, coastal or direct rainfall flooding will be assessed and necessary preventative measures will be identified.

Project director Paul Whitefoot said: “Mott MacDonald helps identify the risk of flooding through our comprehensive flood risk assessment services. Each assessment is different however and as such we provide a tailored service to suit the needs of a particular site. Different types of hydraulic model are developed to suit the site's environment and measure its potential risk from flooding in the most cost effective way. For Scottish Water we have introduced a collaborative modelling methodology which focuses solely on the scale of risk at each site and cost effective delivery.”

Mott MacDonald’s reports are due to be completed by early 2012.

Mott MacDonald has a long-established relationship with Scottish Water, providing engineering design, feasibility studies, as well as strategic, project management and cost consultancy services in addition to network modelling services through a number of framework agreements.
