Aberdeen To Host Major International Energy Event

Aberdeen is to host an international energy event showcasing the future of hydrocarbon extraction.

Experts from across the globe will gather at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 1 and 2 March 2011 for the inaugural Unconventional Gas Conference.

The dependence on gas worldwide is expected to be massive as nations move to a lower carbon economy based on more efficient and cleaner natural gas.

The development of gas from shale in the US since 2000 has led to the resource supplying one fifth of the country's energy needs.

And a recent study shows that China and other countries in Asia may possess up to 3.526 trillion cubic feet of shale deposits.

Experts will examine the potential transition from the conventional upstream oil and gas supply chain to the unconventional sector, focusing on shale gas, tight gas and coalbed methane.

In addition to showcasing existing and future technologies in the unconventional arena the conference will outline the keys to future growth of the industry worldwide.

Visitors will have the opportunity to debate and interact with some of the world's leading players in the unconventional market and gain invaluable understanding of this burgeoning market.

Project Director of Economic and Business Development Gerry Brough said: "This event will ensure that Aberdeen's skills, technology and preparedness to enter new markets are not overlooked in the global rush to develop unconventional gas reserves."

Convener of the Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure Committee Kate Dean added: "Aberdeen City Council has put its resources behind starting up this event in the city as a symbol of its commitment to the long term diversification and internationalisation of the local oil and gas industry."
