Work Begins On New Primary for Whitfield

Work has started on a new £8 million primary school for Whitfield.

Dundee City Council education convener Cllr Liz Fordyce will joined local authority officers and representatives of Robertson, the infrastructure, support services and construction group, to mark the beginning of the project.

The school, which is expected to be open for pupils in spring 2012, is being built as a replacement for the current Whitfield and Newfields primaries, as well as the Whitfield Community Early Years Centre.

Cllr Fordyce said: "The construction of a new primary school for Whitfield will bring much needed contracts for local firms and economic activity at a very difficult time.

"I am pleased that work is starting and that the people of Whitfield can look forward to this new school developing at the centre of the area's regeneration.

"Everyone is very excited at the prospect of this state of the art school becoming a focal point among the many positive changes emerging in Whitfield."

Sean O’Callaghan from Robertson said: “We are delighted to be in attendance today to mark the start of this exciting project. Robertson has a long history working in partnership with Dundee City Council. It is pleasing, not only, to be involved in the creation of a new primary school but to be part of the community and take an active part in the regeneration of the area.”

Facilities in the new three stream primary school will include 21 classrooms, an 80 place nursery, a gym hall, drama/stage facilities, a music room, group rooms and break-out spaces.
