Street lights in Dundee are repaired more than twice as quickly as the next best performing city in Scotland according to a new report.

Councillors will be told next week that as well as a swift response to problems, Dundonians can also expect fewer faults in their street lighting.

Members of Dundee City Council's city development committee will be told that on average repairs were made in just under two days in 2009/2010 compared with three and a half days in the next best performing city.


Committee convener Will Dawson said: "The partnership between the council and Tayside Contracts for the 22,300 street lights in the city has shifted from simply repairing lights when they go out to a planned maintenance regime.

"This way groups of lamps in an area that we know are nearing the end of their life expectancy will be replaced.

"Doing it like this cuts costs, reduces the number of lights out at any one time, brings down fuel consumption and greenhouse gases and produces a higher level of productivity with less time wasted travelling."

The city development committee, which meets on Monday, will be told that Dundee benchmarks its performance against a group of three anonymous cities in a number of categories each year.
