One of Scotland's leading workplace design specialists, Space Solutions, has shown that it can 'practise what it preaches' when it comes being bold in monitoring your property costs.
The company has carried out a review of its Edinburgh premises which has allowed it to free up 700 sq ft of unneeded space – and identified annual savings in excess of £30,000.
The re-evaluation has also allowed the firm to completely refurbish its reception area, meeting rooms and open plan workspace – resulting in a more attractive office and happier employees.
Director Derek Binnie said: "When we go out to meet new clients we are almost evangelical in our message to them to make the most of their property assets to ensure they maximise the potential of their business.
"So it was only right that we put our own preaching into effect by carrying out a property review on our own premises. We knew our offices were not being used fully but even we were surprised at how much savings we were able to make with very little capital cost or upheaval in our day-to-day operations.
“It really brought home to us the significant cost savings that can made – and we’ll be now using our own example as a case study of how any business can benefit for looking more closely at their property assets."
The review at the Space Solutions offices at Beaverbank Business Park in Logie Green Road identified that two wings were surplus and these are now being sub-let. The £30,000 annual savings will come from reduced rent, rates, heating and insurance charges.
Derek added: "Our specialist services in assisting businesses with their property costs means that we have been fortunate to be able to grow during the recession. But despite adding to our workforce, we knew that we had to keep a careful eye on any costs associated with an expansion of our team in Edinburgh. That led us to carry out this review of our premises.
"While the Directors are very happy at the savings that have made, we know that the staff are also delighted at working in a much more attractive environment."
Space Solutions has also used the refurbishment to showcase its range of office furniture as well as innovative mural wall coverings to visiting clients.
