'Modern Practical Masonry' Becomes Widely Available

One of the most iconic books ever published on the subject of stone masonry is about to become widely available again thanks to Stone Federation Great Britain.

First published in 1929, “Modern Practical Masonry” by E.G Warland is rightly recognised as one of the most definitive and useful books on the subject.

Now the Stone Federation has reached an agreement with the original copyright holder which allows the book to be published anew.

“Modern Practical Masonry” has always been considered as particularly helpful for its treatment of geometry detailing and setting out.

It is also a valuable guide to the methods of masonry construction that were in use up to the middle of this century.

The book was last reprinted back in 1953 and the Federation believes that making it available again will help to increase craft knowledge amongst masonry apprentices.

“This move will also help all who are actively connected with architectural and civil engineering masonry construction,” explained the Federation’s Chief Executive Jane Buxey.

“The book is the result of the author’s practical experience in the various branches of the craft, combined with several years’ comprehensive teaching of the subject. He has explained in a direct and simple manner the art of modern practical masonry and illustrated by means of clear line drawings and photographs the way masonry construction adapted to suit more modern building techniques.

“The information contained in the publication should also be of assistance to architects, structural engineers, civil engineers, surveyors, builders, building technicians and teachers of building subjects.

“The foreword notes that some techniques mentioned, particularly those relating to iron and steel cramps and fixings, no longer meet the current European standards, so it is essential that this is taken into account by readers.”

The new paperback edition is available for £35.00 (£25.00 for Stone Federation members) and includes free postage and packaging (postage charge for overseas). Discounts are available for order of five or more. Contact Stone Federation on 01303 856123 or email admin@stonefed.org.uk for further details.
