Following a good response to an offer of free radon tests in Aberdeenshire, there are still more than 2,000 households which haven’t taken it up.
Residents in affected parts of Aberdeenshire were recently offered free or reduced price radon tests, funded by the Scottish government.
Aberdeenshire Council, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and NHS Grampian contacted some residents by letter.
Free tests are being offered in the areas of Aberdeenshire with the highest probability of elevated radon concentrations.
In other radon-affected areas, residents were sent information and offered tests at a reduced price of £38.89 – a saving of £8 off the standard price.
The council also wants to encourage the takeup of this offer, after just 64 requests were forwarded to the HPA.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas, which is colourless, odourless and tasteless and is known to increase the lifetime risk of lung cancer.
The testing kits on offer are easy to use and each one is sent by post with full instructions.
They contain two small circular plastic monitors which are placed in the main living area and a bedroom in normal use, to measure occupants’ exposure to radon.
After three months the monitors are returned to the HPA in the pre-paid envelope supplied. Results will be given in writing, with advice on whether any action is needed to reduce the health risk.
For residents advised to reduce their radon level, a number of radon solution days are planned throughout Aberdeenshire in the Autumn.
Householders will be able to discuss their results with experts from Aberdeenshire Council, the HPA and the Building Research Establishment and obtain information and impartial remedial advice.
Residents who live outside radon affected areas are not eligible for free testing but can also take advantage of the reduced rate for the test through Aberdeenshire Council.
Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, Peter Argyle, said: “It is well known radon levels have traditionally been higher in parts of Aberdeenshire, and we hope householders with concerns about radon levels or who live in a particularly affected area will apply for testing.
“Residents in radon affected areas should take up these offers, as we do not anticipate this opportunity will be repeated and the tests will offer peace of mind.”
Aberdeenshire Council is fortunate to be able to offer over 3,000 free radon tests, and make the additional offer of 6,000 reduced priced tests, as part of a project funded by the Scottish government and worth over £100,000.
Vice Chair Jill Webster said: “These tests provide a confidential report on the level of radon in your home.
“As the technology exists to reduce radon levels and hence the associated risks, testing is a sensible precaution for you and your family.”
Aberdeenshire Council tenants in high risk areas have already been contacted to invite them to carry out a test, which were sent out by the HPA in March.
The simplest way to address radon levels in the home is to improve under-floor ventilation, and the council is happy to provide advice on appropriate measures.
