Some 300 pupils at Hillington Primary School, south-west Glasgow, entered a poster design competition organised by Lovell.
As part of its ongoing safety campaign in schools, Lovell set pupils a fun challenge to design a poster spelling out the message that children and young people should always keep clear of construction sites and building activity.
Hillington pupil Nicole Malcolm, from Primary 5, came up with the winning poster – a hard-hitting design showing a construction worker warning ‘Stay Away Don’t Play!’. Her picture will now be turned into a poster and displayed by Lovell on its nearby construction site at Hartlaw Crescent and Chirnside Place where the company is carrying out work to 219 homes within seven deck access tower blocks as part of Glasgow Housing Association’s £1.2 billion investment programme.
“The children and the school were really enthusiastic about the competition,” said Ness Stewart, senior resident liaison officer for Lovell which is based at the Glasgow Business Park. “We had some amazing entries. Nicole’s picture stood out with a really attention-grabbing image, bold punchy colours and great wording. The pictures showed that the children had understood the importance of the message, coming up with some highly imaginative words and pictures to put it across.” Considerate Constructors Scheme mascot Ivor Goodsite visited the school to help congratulate the winners.
Hillington Primary School head teacher Joyce McCracken said: “The poster competition made our children realise how many hazards can be found on a building site. Through discussion, the children identified these dangers and were able to design a poster to keep children safe. It was a very worthwhile project, very relevant to the children and one which they all really enjoyed.”
