Pupils Learn From New Business Development Scheme

Pupils from Greenwood Academy are continuing to learn from the development of a business park in Irvine.

Around 140 2nd year students from the school have been involved in a project run by Irvine Bay Regeneration Company and developers Speyroc to design branding suitable for Annickbank Business Park. In a process designed to mirror that followed by the professionals on the case, the youngsters were asked to research marketing, branding and logo designs.

While that process simply mirrors the role of professionals, the pupils have also been asked to design a sculpture for the park which – it is hoped – can be erected at the site.

As part of the project, this week the youngsters visited two of the professionals who have helped them with the project – HAA Design and Andy Scott, Public Art.

The students were invited to talk with designers, architects and artists to find out more around issues such as design, creativity, and the need for planning as well as looking at these areas as potential careers.

Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: “This is another example of the positive way in which we are engaging with our young people, using the regeneration process as a way to stimulate new ways to learn, and to create more interest and excitement in their home area. It is always fantastic to see the creativity and energy young people bring to these projects.”

The project has provided an opportunity for the pupils to use the knowledge and understanding they have gained in the classroom and apply it in a ‘real’ context whilst meeting the criteria for the S2 curriculum.
