Oil Rig Workers 'Walk To World Cup'

Hanover Street School in conjunction with Talisman Energy are to take part in an exciting World Cup theme pedometer project.

From Monday 24 May, every P5-P7 pupil at the school will be issued with a pedometer thanks to the energy firm.

Oil rig staff, school staff, parents and members of the community will also take part in the project. The aim is for everyone to work together, over a five week period and walk to Johannesburg in South Africa for the World Cup.

Members of staff on the Claymore Talisman Rig are working towards their Healthy Working Lives Gold award.

Healthy Working Lives is an NHS award scheme which supports employers and employees to develop health promotion and safety themes in the workplace. As part of their Gold award, Talisman Energy must complete a community project.

With in this mind Talisman felt that it would be an ideal opportunity to work with a local school.

Headteacher of Hanover Street School, Debbie Moir said: "This is a very exciting challenge for us all, and we are thrilled to have been chosen to take part. The staff members on the Claymore rig are kindly raising money which the school will use to purchase Connect Challenge; a construction tool which will used to teach pupils about technology."

Talisman Energy medic Brian Stables said: "The Claymore Platform has up to 240 persons onboard and is situated 100 miles North East of Aberdeen in 100 metres of water. The Claymore crew hope to join the children on their World Cup challenge by recording their miles at work and whilst home on leave."

Health Improvement Officer, Anna Gale said: "The pedometer project is a fun example of how health and wellbeing can be taught within the classroom but also reinforced throughout all aspects of school life."

As well as the pedometer project, the pupils will also take part in fun, interactive nutrition lessons as part of the Scottish Government's child healthy weight target for all health boards.
