Foundations Laid For New Ravenscraig Community

Construction News Image
One of the largest regeneration projects in Europe has reached a significant milestone with construction work on the first family homes at the 1,100 acre site of the former Ravenscraig steelworks, getting underway.

Representatives from Ravenscraig Ltd, North Lanarkshire Council, the Scottish Government, Clyde Valley Housing Association and David Wilson Homes, who will oversee the construction of the 850 homes that comprise the first phase of housing, were on-hand to mark the occasion.

Situated next to Carfin and Cleekhimin, the Phoenix Park development will include a range of housing for sale and rent. North Lanarkshire Council and Clyde Valley Housing Association will own and manage 45 of the 850 new homes, all of which have been designed specifically for Ravenscraig.

Jim McCabe, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council said: "The start of the housing development is another important milestone for the regeneration of Ravenscraig. The council has worked hard to ensure that this major project, which is vitally important for the future prosperity of this area, is progressed despite the current difficult economic conditions."

Jim Fitzsimons, project director at Ravenscraig Ltd, said: "The 850 family homes that will be built on the northern part of the site, next to Carfin, are the first of 3,500 planned for Ravenscraig, and together with the new Motherwell College which is already up and running, and the new regional sports facility which is due to open later this year, the construction of these new homes will mark the completion of the first phase of the masterplan."

Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil added: "This housing development marks another important step in the rebirth of Ravenscraig. The Scottish Government has invested millions in the area to aid its regeneration. We want to enrich communities by supporting initiatives that will make a lasting transformation of places to benefit those who live and work there."

When completed the new development will consist of a collection of two, three and four bedroom homes. The first release will be a selection of three bed homes priced from £133,495.
