Scotland’s Minister for Housing and Communities, Alex Neil MSP, has visited Ardrossan to see for himself progress in the regeneration of the Irvine Bay area.
Mr Neil lookied at projects being undertaken by Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, and in particular was interested in talks currently ongoing with Clydeport to clean up the 30 acre site at Ardrossan’s north beach.
A joint venture is being negotiated to provide infrastructure for residential and commercial development as well as expansion of the now fully-occupied marina. Initially a further 165 berths would be possible, rising to create over 500 new berths over time.
Mr Neil also looked at progress in a number of projects which have been funded by the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Regeneration Fund. These included the refurbishing of the former Jack Miller Hotel and the Harbour Bar buildings in Ardrossan, and also the transformation of the former station building in Saltcoats to create commercial space.
Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive of Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: "The Minister takes a keen interest in the work we are doing in Irvine Bay, and we are delighted he is taking the time to come and see and hear for himself how things are progressing.
"Our priority is making a real difference in Irvine Bay, working hard to transform the infrastructure and environment, helping to create new jobs and opportunities."
Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said: "At a time when the economy is fragile, it is important that Irvine Bay Regeneration Company is driving forward with initiatives that boost the local economy and transform five towns in North Ayrshire.
"The Government’s Town Centre Regeneration Fund is making a tangible difference in the area, enriching communities and making a lasting difference, which will benefit those who live and work there."
