Kilmarnock Regeneration Makes Progress

Scaffolding and works are spreading through Kilmarnock’s historic buildings, as a scheme takes hold throughout the town centre.

Councillors, officials and business leaders inspected the latest progress this week and were gratified to see the old buildings being brought back to tip top condition.

As the visitors saw, works are ongoing on the Goodfellows Estate Agents premises at 13-15 West George Street. Thanks to the funds won by the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) scheme, a full programme of conservation is underway to repair and reinstate the roof and ornamental stone vases. Also included is a window overhaul and major works to the stone masonry.

The Goodfellows building is not the only old property to benefit from CARS. Work has now commenced on a number of projects including the former Johnnie Walker Bonded Warehouse at Strand Street and George Tannahill & Son in John Finnie Street. Other sites will soon be undergoing renovation.

Work at Goodfellows, formerly "The George" Public House, will continue into the New Year. The Grade B Listed building was constructed in 1875, and is one of the most impressive structures in the town centre. The grant of approximately £238,000 provided by the CARS Scheme will secure its future for years to come.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council said: "I am delighted that the CARS Team are making good progress with the scheme. West George Street is an important landmark in the town. Refurbishment of the 'Goodfellows' building is an important step in achieving the wider Kilmarnock Town Centre Regeneration objectives."

Christine Rutherford of Goodfellows said of the scheme: "We are confident that our building will meet the standard of other buildings that have already received grant funding. It is to the credit of all involved that Goodfellows has been able to remain open for business throughout the works and will remain so until completion in the New Year".

Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Environment and Regeneration, added: "As part of this scheme, architectural detailing is being reinstated which contributes greatly to the beauty of this building.

"The grant being provided by the Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme will allow this building to be restored to its former glory and provide those coming into the town from the Station with an impressive entrance."
