HM Naval Base Clyde's brand new Supermess – to be named Neptune Building – has opened for breakfast business.
Monday, November 17, saw the Junior Rates' Mess open with Royal Navy personnel tucking into their eggs, bacon and cereal in the plush new surroundings.
Next Monday, November 24, will see the Wardroom go live, with the officers moving into their new home in the building.
The Neptune Regeneration Project, of which the new Supermess is part, has taken eight-years to complete and has cost £125m.
The finished article will provide a whole new retail and leisure concept, giving sailors and workers at HM Naval Base Clyde a "high street experience".
A shopping mall occupies the ground floor of the building with a glazed roof allowing daylight to illuminate the shiny new shop fronts. Shops are not yet open, but will include a convenience store and post office, barber and internet café amongst others. There is also a sports themed bar and bowling alley within the building.
The Mess will provide a life support centre for those living and working at HM Naval Base Clyde.
The Navy's newly built accommodation is situated adjacent to the Supermess and is linked by a series of covered walkways.
The accommodation Project has provided 1,682 brand new bed spaces within the Naval Base, all of them single en-suite rooms or cabins for all ranks.
The task of naming two of the areas within the Supermess has fallen on Naval Base workers.
Christening the All Ranks Facility – a catering facility also fitted with a bar, dance floor and staging, and the Retail Mall itself will be part of a competition open to everyone at the site.
