Free bulky waste items uplift service is to be reintroduced for council tenants in a bid to tackle fly-tipping in Aberdeen.

A charge was introduced for the service last year, with residents being charged £20.30 for the uplift and disposal of up to four bulky items.

There has since been an increase in fly-tipping in the city, particularly on local authority housing estates.

The Housing and Environment Committee has now agreed to reintroduce the free uplift service for council tenants until the end of this financial year.


Housing officers will monitor the situation to see whether the decision has any impact on fly-tipping levels and report back to the committee in the future.

Committee convener Councillor Aileen Malone said: "I am delighted that the committee agreed unanimously to the reintroduction of the service. Fly-tipping on our housing estates is on the increase, bringing with it fire, safety and pollution problems.

"We will now monitor the effectiveness of the reintroduction and will receive a follow-up report at the start of the 2010/11 financial year, which will look at the possibility of outsourcing the bulky uplift service to a social enterprise."
