Graeme Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, housing and homelessness charity, has commended the Scottish Government for bringing forward Draft Home Owner and Debtor Protection legislation.

The Director said that he would look through the fine detail in the days to come.

"Given that thousands of families in Scotland are staring the spectre of repossession in the face, this bill could act as a saviour for them by making repossession a last resort.


"We call on all parties in the Scottish Parliament to side with those faced with losing their home by scrutinising and passing these new protections swiftly. But this is a two sided coin and we also urge lenders to show restraint, as advised by the Council of Mortgage Lenders."

He continued: "Sadly, while people up and down the country are facing the prospect of repossession, they face little or no prospect of a social tenancy, given that there are already 200,000 people on council waiting lists.

"This bill can ensure repossession is a last resort but where it happens, we must have enough homes to house people in desperate need."
