Roofing Specialists of the Year 2016 Award Winners
It is a great honour to announce our new title as 'Roofing Specialists of the Year' 2016 by Construction News magazine. Full press release from Construction News below:
A combination of traditional values, progressive attitudes and commitment to skills underpinned the winner of this year's Roofing Specialist award.
Greenough & Sons Roofing Contractors, a slate and lead roofing specialist, impressed the judges by going "above and beyond" what would normally be expected of a small contractor in today's marketplace.
The Anglesey-based firm, which typically has around 30 staff on its books, showed a commitment to skills beyond some of its larger rivals, offering bespoke training and support to young, local people in north Wales, alongside a dedication to maintaining the highest health and safety standards.
Greenough's focus on heritage projects in the UK won plaudits among the judges, who praised the firm's "highly skilled and technical" work on major projects such as Chester Town Hall's re-roofing.
"Without companies like them, heritage buildings in the UK would be under real threat," the panel said.
The firm is the country's largest user of Welsh roofing slate and has encouraged the use and re-use of this local material in all the projects it has worked on.
The company's success has also led to work abroad, with projects in Finland, Australia, Canada and Russia already under its belt. It is also set to work in Denmark on a re-roofing project in 2016.
Although the company has a focus on traditional materials and techniques, the judges were also impressed by the firm's dedication to innovation.
Staff are encouraged to put forward their own innovations for the business, and the firm has invented a specialist anti-theft clip system on lead roofing panels to dramatically reduce the chance of theft from historic buildings.
"Greenough showed a very impressive range of incredibly intricate and technical projects ranging from large to small," the judges said, with some of the oldest churches in Wales among its schemes.
The judges praised the firm's commitment to skills and its desire to support and employ local young people. They were impressed by Greenough's willingness to inspire the next generation into construction - the firm acts as a CITB construction ambassador and regularly visits schools to tell children about the projects it works on.
The company is expected to post a healthy profit this financial year, and the judges recognised that there would be "a great opportunity to grow the business".
With its commitment to traditional skills and a desire to inspire interest in construction, Greenough & Sons is "supporting a skill base that is rapidly disappearing, and should be rewarded for that", the judges concluded.
