Kier Delivers University Accommodation

Construction News Image
Kier Construction, in a partnership with Alumno Developments, has completed an £8m project to deliver student accommodation in Glasgow's West End.

The project saw the site of a former retail store in the area converted into student residence and a modern retail space. The student accommodation comprises of 174 bedrooms and has shared kitchen facilities.

The ground floor of the building is an open retail space, with full-height glazing; while the remaining five floors will be used as student accommodation, with 24-hour security and an on-site warden.

Brian McQuade, Managing Director of Kier Construction's Scotland & north-east England business, said: "We were delighted to work with Alumno Developments on this mixed-use site in Dumbarton Road. We have delivered a building – on time and within budget – which will not only provide much needed quality accommodation for students attending Glasgow's many educational facilities, but also a bright and attractive retail space, which will create jobs and help re-energise the area."

David Campbell, Managing Director of Alumno, added: "With our partners we have delivered a highly sustainable, modern and well-designed development of high quality that combines both purpose-built student accommodation and attractive retail units at street level.

"It will be well managed around the clock, providing excellent on-site facilities as well as support and welfare services for students. In addition, the development is car-free, supporting local transport use and infrastructure. Kier has produced a sustainable building which embraces modern methods of construction.

"This development will help meet the high demand for student accommodation, particularly within the West End, which Glasgow has generally been identified as lacking by sector analysts. It will also create employment opportunities and energise this part of the city, contributing positively to the appearance, vitality and security of the area by breathing new life into this corner of Partick and supporting the wider regeneration aspirations of the city."

Work on the development, which is located within walking distance of the University of Glasgow, started in April 2013.
